Why Do Believers Stop Growing?

Part 1. Well- Established, Yet No Longer Growing

Recognizing and Receiving God- Given Mentors

Many believers spend years walking with the Lord. They faithfully attend worship services, pray, listen to biblical teaching, and serve in the church. Outwardly, everything seems to be in order. Yet, as the years pass, noticeable growth in their relationships, character, stewardship, emotional maturity, and sense of responsibility often fails to appear. It is not because they lack biblical knowledge or genuine faith. The question, then, is why their lives remain largely unchanged. The problem is not a lack of greater revelation. Rather, it is that although they have heard many excellent teachings, they have not allowed the Word of God to confront and transform their own lives. We eagerly seek gifted preachers and inspiring messages, yet we often resist those whom God places close to us to correct our attitudes, habits, and ways of thinking. We gladly receive messages of blessing but avoid messages of correction. We desire the authority of faith while refusing to surrender our pride and stubbornness. As a result, God's Word accumulates as knowledge, but it fails to produce genuine transformation. God never intended His people to grow in isolation. He shapes us within the context of biblical community and through the influence of other believers. Pastors, spouses, parents, friends, and fellow workers are often God's instruments for revealing our weaknesses and leading us toward maturity. Unfortunately, we tend to admire well-known spiritual leaders from a distance while overlooking or even resisting those nearby who lovingly challenge us. When we fail to recognize the people God has placed in our lives, we often miss the very opportunities He has provided for our spiritual growth. Jesus illustrated this truth in the story of the rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16). The rich man believed that if someone returned from the dead, his brothers would surely repent. Yet Abraham replied, "If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead." True transformation does not begin with greater miracles but with obedience to the truth we have already received. Those who reject the loving correction of God's servants today will not necessarily change even after experiencing extraordinary spiritual events. Therefore, what we need most is not another new revelation but the humility to embrace the truth we have already heard. A true mentor does not seek to draw people to himself but to help them become more like Christ. Such a person is not concerned with pleasing our emotions but is willing to speak difficult truths in love and encourage us to examine ourselves before God's Word. Through these faithful relationships, God corrects our attitudes and leads us toward spiritual maturity. Spiritual growth does not begin by hearing more sermons. It begins when we allow God's Word to deal with our hearts. Each of us should honestly ask: Am I only looking for messages that make me feel good? Do I have someone who is willing to correct me in love? Do I immediately become defensive when I receive correction? Am I waiting for someone more impressive while ignoring the people God has already placed beside me? The measure of spiritual growth is not how much biblical knowledge we possess, but how humbly we submit ourselves to God's Word and receive the loving correction of those He has appointed to help us grow.

Part 2. The Foundation That Must Be Established Before Higher Revelation

Bringing Our Attitudes and Emotions into Obedience

God has entrusted us with the glorious truths of the gospel. We are new creations in Christ, united with Him in His death and resurrection, children of God, and people who overcome the world through faith. These truths stand at the very heart of the New Testament and possess the power to transform our lives. Yet it is possible for believers to embrace these profound doctrines while showing little evidence of transformation in their daily lives. They possess rich theological understanding, but their marriages, workplaces, and relationships continue to reflect old patterns of living. Why does this happen? The problem is not a lack of revelation. Before higher revelation can bear fruit, the foundation of daily obedience must first be established. No matter how profound the truth we hear may be, it cannot become the power of God in our lives unless our thoughts, emotions, attitudes, and habits are brought under the authority of His Word. Biblical truth is never intended to remain intellectual knowledge; it is meant to become practical reality. In everyday life we are easily ruled by our emotions. When someone points out our mistakes, we often react more strongly to their tone than to the truth they are speaking. We cling to our wounded feelings instead of receiving the correction God is offering through another person. Sometimes we reject God's voice simply because it came through imperfect words. Spiritually mature believers respond differently. Even when correction is expressed imperfectly, they first ask themselves, "What is God trying to teach me through this situation?" Those who embrace truth continue to grow, while those who cling to their emotions remain spiritually stagnant. Those who offer correction must also guard their hearts. Speaking the truth does not give us permission to speak carelessly. Truth without love often wounds rather than restores. The same words can either build up or tear down depending on the spirit in which they are spoken. Our facial expressions, tone of voice, attitude, and compassion should communicate the love of Christ. Throughout Scripture, God never separates truth from love, and neither should we. For this reason, learning to govern our emotions is an essential part of spiritual maturity. Fasting is far more than abstaining from food; it is a spiritual discipline through which we surrender our desires, pride, anger, and defensiveness before God. Husbands must examine their own responsibilities. Wives must examine theirs. Parents and children alike must first allow God's Word to search their own hearts instead of trying to change everyone else. God's grace is experienced most deeply by those who first humble themselves before Him. Ultimately, believers stop growing not because they lack new revelation but because they fail to practice the truth they already know. Revelation transforms our thinking; renewed thinking changes our attitudes; changed attitudes reshape our actions; and consistent actions produce a transformed life. Only then does God's Word become living reality, and only then does the life of the new creation become visible in everyday living. Therefore, instead of continually pursuing greater revelation, we should begin by obeying the truths God has already shown us. We must choose truth over emotion, humility over pride, and love over criticism. The reality of the gospel is demonstrated in the way we treat our spouses, raise our children, manage our finances, and respond to conflict. A new creation is not someone who is different only inside the church but someone whose entire life reflects Christ. When God's Word becomes reality in our daily lives, genuine spiritual growth begins once again.
